Anna Smart was born March 27, 1883 in Almond to John Smart and his wife Martha Smith. Martha died when Anna was 2 days old. She went to live with her Aunt Ella Smart and her husband William J Knights in Wild Rose. Anna married Edward Hoaglin who ran the Wild Rose Milling Co. on September 20, 1905. Mr. Knights was the one who used his mill to power street lights in Wild Rose in 1908 for the first time. The Hoaglins lived in the house at 530 Main Street which was orginally built by Dr. Carey before 1900.. They had two children Edith and Edward John. Anna was the first librarian in Wild Rose. Anna died February 5, 1954. William Knights was born March 26, 1853 in Herkimer County, New York to William E & Caroline Knights. Mr Knights was in Wild Rose by 1880 and lived and worked for his future brother-in-law Charles Smart. Mr. Knights was one of the three founders of the Gideons who placed Bibles in hotel rooms. Ella died in the flu epidemic of 1919. In 1923 he married Lelah Larsen. They lived at 637 Carey Avenue in Wild Rose. Billy as Lelah called him died August 22, 1940.This painting was done before her marriage and shows that although she was a Smart she also used the Knights surname. |
