Josiah Etheridge's Log Cabin


Josiah Etheridge built this log cabin on land in Section 19 N,
10 E in the W1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 10.  Josiah
immigrated from Woodmancote,Gloucestershire, England
in 1848.  When he first came he lived near the site of the
West Holden Church with Frederick Barnes who was also
from Woodmancote. Josiah was born January 31, 1829 in
Woodmancote & baptized in Bishops Cleeve.  His parents
were Benjamin Etheridge and Mary Boulton.  He married
Nancy Permelia Pease January 11, 1852 in Wautoma. 
Permelia as she was known was the daughter of Alanson
Pease & Nancy Jeffers. She was born September 14, 1836
in Rose, Wayne County, New York.  Josiah built the cabin
before the land was surveyed.  He was able to buy 80
acres on a pre-emption under the Script Act of 1850. 
Jonathan Anderson of Tennessee had bounty land rights
for his service under Captain John Lewis and Colonel
Booth of the 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Militia in the
Creek War during the War of 1812. He sold his rights. 

Josiah had 4 children, Alanson Pease Etheridge, Mary
who married Oren Jenks, Benjamin who lived 5 months
and Fanny who married Jerry Pierce.  Permelia died June
29, 1912 and Josiah died January 12, 1922.
