Mary Thomas Pickering

Mary Elizabeth Thomas was born July 22, 1855 in 

the Town of Rose.  Her parents were William John 

Thomas who came from Oneida County, NY and 

Mary Elizabeth Williams from North Wales.  She 

went to work in Chicago. She married Evan Fayette 

Pickering in Chicago on April 24, 1879.  Fayette 

was the son of Ephraim Pickering and Mary Daniels.  

They moved to California in the mid 1880's. Her 

husband is described in his voter registration as 

5 feet 7 1/2 inches, light complexion, blue eyes 

and light hair.  By 1910 Mary is living with her 

son Harry and is listed as a widow.  They also 

had a son Frank.  Mary died in Los Angeles on 

May 24, 1936.  Notice her fancy hair and dress.  

I believe the picture is before she married. Mary 

had 4 sisters:Sophia Jane, Emily Ann, Abby and 

Maggie. Maggie had a twin brother Frederick  

Maggie stayed in the area and married James Murty.
