Jessie Vergin Caves

Jessie Mae Vergin was born December 5, 1921 to
George Vergin (1886-1964) and his wife Nancy Viola
Hanson (1886-1980) in Poy Sippi.  She went to the
one room, Copenhagen school in Poy Sippi.  She
delayed high school because she earned money to
pay for boarding in Wild Rose with Frances Lane on
Euclid  Ave. in Wild Rose. Jessie was elected class
President as a 
freshman. She played "Grace Jasper"
in the play "Sunbonnet Jane Sycamore Lane." She
participated in forensics in extemporaneous reading
and serious declamation.  As a senior she played Mrs.
Kimball in "Going Places." Jessie tied for first in the
class academically with Gertrude Williams. Her
appearance was intelligent. Her weakness was
"red heads." Her saying was "I don't believe it."
essie married Robert Ross Caves September 2,
1944.  They lived in Hancock until May of 1945
when they moved to Wild Rose. Jessie was active
in the Methodist Church, the Wild Rose Auxiliary,
Friends of the Library, Spring Rose Homemakers,
the PTA including being a room mother. She was
active in the Wild Rose Historical Society especially
guiding in Pioneer Hall and starting the flip boards
of pictures. She was a member and officer in the
Women's Club when it won the National Award for
Community Achievement in 1958. The award was
for $10,000.  She also found time to be a den
mother and a leader for Bluebirds. Jessie died
August 26, 2006.  She is buried in Oakhill.  Jessie
& Bob had four children: Don, Larry, Vicki and James.
